1. Overview

Spell It Now (spellitnow.com) is a text-to-phonetic alphabet converter supporting multiple international and regional spelling alphabet standards. This policy explains how we collect, use, and share information when you use the Service.

2. Information we collect

  • Usage data (optional): When analytics is enabled, Google Analytics may collect information about how you use the Service (such as pages viewed, interactions, device and browser details, and approximate location derived from IP).
  • Advertising data (optional): We do not currently display ads. If advertising is enabled in the future, providers like Google AdSense may collect device identifiers, cookie data, and ad interaction information to deliver and measure ads.
  • Hosting and security logs: Our hosting provider (Firebase Hosting) may log standard request information like IP address, user agent, and timestamps to deliver the Service and protect against abuse.
  • Preferences and progress stored on your device: We use localStorage to store data locally in your browser, including but not limited to your theme choice, selected phonetic alphabet, privacy preferences, practice progress and achievements, and speed challenge records. This data is stored entirely in your browser and never leaves your device or is sent to our servers.
  • Input text: Text you enter is processed entirely in your browser and is not sent to our servers. The text-to-speech feature uses your browser's built-in speech synthesis and does not transmit audio or text externally. If you use the Share feature, the text is added to the URL query string and may be stored in browser history or shared with anyone you send the link to.
  • Contact information: If you contact us, we receive your email address and the content of your message.

3. How we use information

We use information collected through the Service for purposes including, but not limited to:

  • Providing, operating, and maintaining the Service.
  • Understanding usage patterns and improving the Service (analytics, with consent).
  • Delivering and measuring ads (if advertising is enabled, with consent).
  • Maintaining security, preventing abuse, and debugging issues.
  • Responding to inquiries and providing support.
  • Complying with legal obligations and enforcing our terms.

4. Legal bases (EEA/UK)

If the GDPR or UK GDPR applies, we rely on the following legal bases:

  • Consent for analytics and advertising cookies.
  • Legitimate interests to operate, secure, and improve the Service.

You can withdraw consent at any time using the privacy preferences link in the footer.

5. Cookies, local storage, and similar technologies

We use cookies and localStorage to provide the Service. Essential storage helps remember your theme and privacy choices. Analytics cookies are optional and only enabled after consent. Advertising cookies are only used if ads are enabled in the future and you consent. You can manage settings via the privacy preferences link or your browser controls. We do not respond to "Do Not Track" signals, but we honor Global Privacy Control (GPC) as an opt-out signal for optional cookies.

6. Analytics and advertising partners

We use Firebase Analytics (powered by Google Analytics) when you provide consent. This helps us understand how the Service is used so we can improve it. Analytics data may include, but is not limited to:

  • Pages and features you use (e.g., converter, practice mode, speed challenge)
  • Actions you take (e.g., sharing, printing, changing themes or alphabets)
  • Device and browser information
  • Approximate location derived from IP address
  • Session duration and engagement metrics

If we introduce advertising in the future (for example, Google AdSense), it will only run after you opt in. These services may collect data as described in Google's policies. Learn more at Google Privacy Policy and Firebase Privacy.

We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. If we enable advertising in the future, you will be able to opt out at any time.

7. Sharing and disclosures

  • Service providers: We share data with vendors that provide analytics, advertising, hosting, and security services.
  • Content delivery: We load fonts from Google Fonts, which may receive your IP address and browser details when your device requests the font files.
  • Legal obligations: We may disclose information to comply with law, protect rights, or respond to lawful requests.

8. International transfers

Our providers may process data in the United States and other countries. We rely on contractual and other safeguards where required.

9. Data retention

  • Analytics data: Retained in Firebase Analytics according to our configuration (default 14 months) or as required by applicable law.
  • Advertising data: If enabled, managed by the advertising provider (e.g., Google AdSense) per their settings and policies.
  • Local data: Data stored in your browser's localStorage (including but not limited to theme preferences, alphabet selection, practice progress, achievements, speed challenge records, and consent choices) persists until you clear it.
  • Contact messages: Kept as long as reasonably needed to respond, provide support, and for recordkeeping purposes.

10. Your choices and controls

  • Use the privacy preferences link in the footer to manage analytics consent and any future ad preferences.
  • Clear cookies and localStorage in your browser settings to remove all locally stored data including preferences, progress, achievements, and speed records.
  • Enable Global Privacy Control (GPC) to opt out of optional cookies and analytics where supported.
  • Use your browser's developer tools to selectively clear specific localStorage keys if desired.
