How Pilots Use the Phonetic Alphabet
Call signs, runways, ATIS letters, and the radio discipline that keeps aviation safe
Aviation's Common Language
Every second of every day, pilots and air traffic controllers who may share no native language exchange safety-critical instructions over crowded, crackly radio frequencies. The system that makes this work is standardized radiotelephony — and at its core sits the ICAO phonetic alphabet, adopted internationally in 1956 and published in ICAO Annex 10.
In the cockpit it is not an occasional convenience. Nearly everything with letters in it is spoken phonetically: call signs, taxiways, waypoints, weather reports, clearance codes. A misheard letter can put an aircraft on the wrong runway, so the alphabet is drilled until it is second nature — student pilots typically learn it before their first radio call.
Aircraft Call Signs
Private aircraft are identified by their registration. A US aircraft registered N123AB introduces itself as:
Radio call:
"November One Two Three Alpha Bravo"
Airlines instead use a telephony designator plus flight number. Some are straightforward ("United 452"), others are famous nicknames: British Airways is Speedbird, Aer Lingus is Shamrock, and China Airlines is Dynasty. But when a controller needs to spell anything — a waypoint, a company name, a fix identifier — it comes out in Alpha-Bravo form.
Runways and Taxiways
Runways are numbered from their magnetic heading rounded to the nearest ten degrees: a runway pointing 274° becomes Runway 27, spoken "Runway Two Seven". Parallel runways add Left, Center, or Right: "Runway Two Seven Left".
Taxiways, on the other hand, are lettered — and always spoken phonetically. Ground control might say:

"Taxi to Runway Two Seven Left via Alpha, Bravo, hold short of Runway Three Three"
The pilot must read this back word for word. Taxiway confusion has caused real accidents, which is why letters are never spoken as bare letters on the ground frequency.
ATIS: Information Alpha through Zulu
Airports broadcast a recorded weather and operations summary called the ATIS. Each new version gets the next letter of the alphabet: Information Alpha, then Bravo, then Charlie, cycling through Zulu and starting over. On first contact, pilots confirm they have current information — "with Information Golf" — so the controller knows the pilot's picture of the airport is up to date.
Numbers Get Special Treatment Too
The alphabet's companion is a set of digit pronunciations designed for the same noisy channels: tree for 3, fower for 4, fife for 5, and niner for 9. A radio frequency of 123.45 MHz is spoken "One Two Tree Decimal Fower Fife". Readback: Trust, but Verify
Phonetic spelling is only half of aviation's error-proofing. The other half is the readback/hearback loop: safety-critical instructions — runway assignments, altitudes, headings, frequencies — must be repeated back by the pilot, and the controller must listen for errors in the readback. If either side is unsure, the phrase "Say again" (never "repeat") requests a retransmission. Our procedure words guide explains the full vocabulary.
Tips for Student Pilots
- Learn the alphabet before the radio. Fumbling for "Lima" while keying the mic is the classic student mistake. Drill until recall is instant.
- Practice your own tail number. You will say it thousands of times — it should flow as one word.
- Listen to live ATC. Streams of real tower frequencies are a free masterclass in rhythm and phrasing.
- Write clearances as letters, not words. Hear "Alpha", write "A". Your kneeboard shorthand should be instant in both directions.
