T in the Military Alphabet: Tango
Code word, pronunciation, history, and how to use it when spelling out loud
In the military alphabet, the letter T is Tango, pronounced TANG-go. It is the NATO/ICAO code word for T, in continuous use on military, aviation, and marine radio since March 1956. Two hard syllables ending in an open vowel make it one of the easiest words in the alphabet to catch through interference.
Why "Tango"?
Tango names the dance that grew up around the Río de la Plata, in Argentina and Uruguay, in the late nineteenth century; the deeper origin of the word itself is still debated by linguists, so no single source can be stated with confidence. What is certain is why it suited ICAO: by the mid-twentieth century the tango was known on every continent, the word exists essentially unchanged in English, French, and Spanish, and it sounds like no other code word in the set. It appeared in the 1951 alphabet and survived the 1956 revision intact.

Tango in the Field
In tactical radio traffic, "tango" doubles as slang for a hostile — from T standing for target or terrorist — which is why assault teams report "Tango down" when a threat is neutralized. Ground controllers assign it to taxiways ("hold short at Tango"), and "Tango Yankee" is common shorthand for "thank you" among service members. The phrase "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" has even crossed into civilian slang, three code words spelling an exasperated question.
