Z in the Military Alphabet: Zulu
Code word, pronunciation, history, and how to use it when spelling out loud
In the military alphabet, the letter Z is Zulu, pronounced ZOO-loo. It closes the NATO phonetic alphabet and doubles as the military and aviation name for Coordinated Universal Time, which is why UTC timestamps are read out as Zulu time.
Why "Zulu"?
The word comes from the Zulu people of southern Africa, whose name was familiar worldwide by the twentieth century. ICAO's selection work for the 1951 international alphabet demanded words recognizable to speakers of English, French, and Spanish, able to survive distortion on a poor radio channel, and unlikely to be mistaken for any other word in the set; Zulu's two crisp, open syllables met every test. It then passed unchanged through the 1956 revision that fixed the alphabet NATO still uses.
Z Across Spelling Alphabets
| Alphabet | Word for Z |
|---|---|
| NATO/ICAO | Zulu |
| LAPD | Zebra |
| Western Union | Zero |
| German (Classic) | Zacharias |
| German (DIN 5009:2022) | Zwickau |
| French | Zoé |
| Spanish | Zaragoza |
| Italian | Zara |
| Able Baker (WWII, historical) | Zebra |
| RAF 1924 (historical) | Zebra |
Zebra held the Z slot for more than a quarter century: the RAF adopted it in 1924 and the WWII Able Baker alphabet retained it. ICAO replaced Zebra with Zulu in its 1951 international alphabet, and NATO carried Zulu forward into the March 1956 alphabet.
Zulu in the Field
Zulu earns most of its airtime as a time reference. The military time-zone system assigns the letter Z to the zero meridian at Greenwich, so orders, flight plans, and weather reports are stamped in Zulu time: a METAR issued at 191750Z describes conditions observed at 17:50 UTC. Pilots crossing time zones file everything in Zulu so a departure in Tokyo and an arrival in Los Angeles share one clock. The word also ends plenty of call signs; a UK aircraft registered G-ABCZ checks in as Golf Alpha Bravo Charlie Zulu.
"Z as in Zulu" on the Phone
The surname is Diaz: D as in Delta, I as in India, A as in Alpha, Z as in Zulu.

ONE TO REMEMBER
The military time-zone letters run through the whole alphabet but skip J, because Juliett is reserved to mean the observer's local time, while Z marks Greenwich, which is why UTC became Zulu time.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Z in the military alphabet?
Z is Zulu, the final code word of the NATO phonetic alphabet. Saying Zulu instead of the bare letter keeps Z from being lost or misheard in radio noise.
How do you pronounce Zulu?
ZOO-loo, with the stress on the first syllable. ICAO's published respelling is ZOO LOO.
What came before Zulu for the letter Z?
Zebra, in both the RAF's 1924 alphabet and the WWII US-UK Able Baker alphabet. Zulu took over with ICAO's international alphabet in 1951 and was retained by NATO in 1956.
Why is UTC called Zulu time?
Military and aviation practice labels each time zone with a letter, and Z designates the zone of the Greenwich meridian. Spoken over the radio in the phonetic alphabet, Z becomes Zulu, so a UTC timestamp such as 0600Z is read as zero six hundred Zulu.
